About the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive)

The EPBD aims to promote the improvement of energy performance in buildings across the EU, taking into account outdoor climatic and local conditions, indoor climate requirements, and cost-effectiveness. It sets out binding targets and timelines to drive progression. Its recent updates have introduced mandatory lifecycle-based environmental assessments - including Whole‑Building LCA - underlining its evolving role in integrating sustainability into European building policy.

Bunthan IEA

Bunthan holds an engineering degree in mechanics of materials and structures from École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, and a PhD in new methods for assessing the fire resistance of structural building elements. He has previously served as Project Manager for Building Environmental Performance at the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, and Territories in France. Currently, Bunthan is a Policy Officer at the European Commission, contributing to energy efficiency policies, notably in implementing the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), with a focus on GWP life-cycle assessment of buildings and the Smart Readiness Indicator.

Additionally, it represents the interests of the EU on the global stage, ensuring a coordinated approach among EU countries.

Helle Redder Momsen

Helle earned her bachelor’s degree in Energy, Environment, Climate, Sustainable Development and Business, and her master’s in Strategies in Emerging Markets. She has worked as a project assistant at the Danish Energy Industries Federation, a project manager at State of Green for over three years, and an advisor at the Danish Energy Agency for four years. Now serving as Head of Secretariat of Nordic Sustainable Construction under the Danish Authority for Social Services and Housing, Helle represents the programme at EU-level forums and advances harmonised LCA practices, circular economy initiatives, and carbon-neutral construction across the Nordics.

Nordic Sustainable Construction

Nordic Sustainable Construction is a programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers, which contributes to the Nordic Vision 2030 of becoming a sustainable and integrated region by 2030 with respect to sustainable construction and housing. Promotes collaboration across the region to harmonise regulations, tools, data, and methods for reducing the environmental and climate impact of construction. It convenes national authorities and stakeholders to share knowledge, develop harmonised LCA approaches, set climate-related limit values, and support circular, low-carbon construction practices.

Jakob Klinkwort

Jakob works as a Constructing Architect, at the awards-winning studio: Dorte Mandrup Architects, with a particular interest in sustainable materials and construction methods. As an LCA specialist, Jakob has led Life Cycle Assessments on many of the studio’s projects, building on knowledge from his dissertation thesis of comparing the LCA calculation processes and methods from different standards across countries. His analysis of materials and processes has been central in helping design teams and clients make more informed and sustainable design choices. As a BIM expert, he has a flair for utilising data and creating intelligent 3D BIM models, making LCA and sustainability well-documented and integrated in a digital design methodology in the office. Jakob has held talks and guest lectures at Harvard University, BIM Universe and BILT Europe.

Dorte Mandrup Architects

Danish architecture studio Dorte Mandrup was founded by architect Dorte Mandrup in 1999 and is internationally recognised for its ability to create architecture that actively engages with the complexities of each place and contributes with new relevance. In recent years, the studio has distinguished itself in the architectural field with extraordinary projects like the Wadden Sea Centre in Denmark, The Whale in Norway, the Exile Museum in Berlin, Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre in Canada, and Ilulissat Icefjord Centre in Greenland.

Mads Ditlevsen

Mads has a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a master’s degree in sustainable design. He began his sustainability career as a Sustainability Consultant at ABC – Rådgivende Ingeniører. Currently, Mads is Sustainability Lead at Real-Time LCA, driving initiatives to measure and reduce carbon emissions in the AEC sector through data-driven decision-making for sustainable construction practices.
