Bilfinger Digitalizes Offshore Scaffolding Planning

Bilfinger Nordic is a leading provider of scaffolding, insulation, surface treatment, welding habitats, and rope access services in the Norwegian oil and gas industry. The work often takes place on complex offshore installations, where safety, accuracy, and efficient execution are crucial for project success.

The Challenge

Bilfinger lacked an overview of anchoring points when scaffolding needed to be built suspended over the sea. The team had to inspect everything manually at height, which was time-consuming and increased risk. This made planning less predictable.

The Solution

Bilfinger has implemented NTI SCAFFPLANNER to digitise the entire planning process. Anchoring points and scaffolding were precisely modeled in Revit - completely eliminating the need for physical inspection.

The Result

Work at height has been reduced, and both the team and customers gain better insight before construction begins. The planning process is clearer, safer, and more efficient. Significant time savings are already noticeable - up to 20% of build time.

The Search for a Smarter Scaffolding Tool

The need for more efficient and safer planning led Bilfinger to evaluate various digital tools for scaffolding design. After a thorough review, they chose NTI SCAFFPLANNER, an intuitive and feature-rich tool integrated in Autodesk Revit. It stood out by offering precise modeling and a workflow that aligned seamlessly with Bilfinger’s existing processes.

Digital Scaffolding Modeling as a New Starting Point

With NTI SCAFFPLANNER, Bilfinger was able to perform the entire scaffolding planning digitally before any offshore work began. Anchoring points could be identified visually and safely, and all necessary components were included directly in the model. This provided both the project team and the customer with a clear understanding of how the scaffolding would be built and where it would be placed on the platform.

Collaboration with NTI further streamlined the process, as feedback from Bilfinger was quickly incorporated into the tool’s development.

Reducing Work at Height

A major advantage of NTI SCAFFPLANNER is that we can reduce the time people spend working at height, and everyone gets a clearer understanding of the job that needs to be done.

Bilfinger Nordics

Bilfinger is one of the leading providers of industrial services in the Nordic region. The company provides maintenance, insulation, scaffolding and surface treatment services, as well as engineering and project services for the process industry throughout the Nordic region.

Clearer Planning and Safer Workdays

Digitising scaffolding planning has led to significant improvements. Work at height has been reduced substantially, as critical clarifications are now made in advance within the model. Projects achieve more structured planning, and communication between Bilfinger and its customers becomes simpler and clearer. In larger projects like the Oseberg Gas Capacity Upgrade, Bilfinger experienced notable time savings in the positioning of scaffolding.

Efficient in Complex Operations

In a large project on the Snorre-B platform - where Bilfinger built suspended scaffolding beneath four lifeboats - the digital planning was particularly valuable. The model made it possible to visualize and verify the entire structure before construction, and Bilfinger achieved a reduction of around 20 percent in build time compared to previous methods. This strengthened both safety and efficiency.

A Digital Leap for Offshore Projects

For Bilfinger, NTI SCAFFPLANNER has become a key tool in modernising offshore and onshore workflows. The digital approach provides better predictability, higher quality, and more efficient execution of scaffolding operations.

The NTI Edge

NTI combines software expertise with deep industry insight to help customers embed new digital capabilities into their existing workflows. Rather than treating implementation as a standalone task, NTI works closely with organisations to adapt solutions to real-world practices and business needs.

This approach enables companies to move from fragmented processes to more integrated and data-driven ways of working—unlocking measurable efficiency gains while strengthening the foundation for sustainable and scalable operations.
