AFRY Tests NTI COMANAGE as a Foundation for Better Project Data

Construction

How do you create a better overview of project data across complex projects?

AFRY is in the process of implementing NTI COMANAGE on selected projects and shares their first experiences with the platform's central data management and stronger foundation for a more data-driven way of working.

Challenge

Project data was handled manually in Excel, making it difficult for AFRY to ensure uniform data across industrial projects with many models and buildings.

Solution

AFRY implements NTI COMANAGE on selected projects to gather project and property data in one central platform with integration to Autodesk Forma.

Results

In the first projects with NTI COMANAGE, AFRY sees a better overview of project data and valuable experiences, which will form the basis for a broader implementation if the results hold.

Many industrial projects place high demands on data quality. When several buildings, disciplines and project teams work in parallel, consistent property data becomes crucial for both design, quality assurance and operations.

At the engineering company AFRY, the management of project data has long been a focus area. As one of the largest engineering companies in the Nordic region, they work on complex industrial and life science projects, where uniform data is essential for efficient processes.

To create a stronger data foundation, AFRY is in the process of implementing NTI COMANAGE as a central platform for managing project and property data. The solution was first applied to selected projects with plans to implement across the organisation, if the long term results are as positive as they hope.

"The biggest advantage of NTI COMANAGE is the overview when preparing and maintaining property data," says Kenneth Højbjerg, Digital Lead at AFRY.

From Excel sheets to central data management

Until now, project data has primarily been handled through Excel sheets, automatic export jobs, and manual workflows. Although some of the processes were partially automated, AFRY was still dependent on export files, macros and manual controls.

This created challenges – especially on projects with many buildings and hundreds of thousands of components.

If data does not match between models, descriptions and quotation lists, it can lead to errors, extra quality assurance and delays. At the same time, BIM designers often become a bottleneck because other project members rely on exports from Revit to access the necessary data.

As Kenneth describes it:

"We actually wanted to turn it around, so it was the engineers who had the lead in the work with the property data of building parts. There was quickly a bottleneck with our BIM designers, and it wasn't always appropriate."

A platform that fits into the digital strategy

When AFRY chose NTI COMANAGE, there was one thing in particular that made the solution interesting: the integration to Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC)).

"The burning point for us was the ACC integration, because then some opportunities started to open up that we didn't have before," says Kenneth.

The company has a strategy that projects with Revit should work via Forma, and therefore it was crucial to find a solution that could build on top of the existing platform rather than creating yet another isolated data silo.

With NTI COMANAGE, project data can be centrally collected, synchronised with the models and made available to employees who do not necessarily work directly in Revit. This allows engineers and specialists to access the data they need faster without having to wait for export files first.

Better overview of data quality

AFRY is still in the implementation phase, where the organisation is continuously developing workflows and the use of the platform.

However, Kenneth already sees the greatest value in the data overview.

Instead of having to wait for manual extractions, he can log in and get an up-to-date picture of the data quality across the projects, making it easier to:

  • Checking the consistency of type coding
  • Identify deviations across buildings
  • Detect potential errors earlier in the process.

On projects with several buildings and lots of similar components, this significiantly improves quality assurance.

Kenneth explains:

"It's pretty cool that I can log in and see if there's consistency in our type coding." He adds: "I don't have to wait for an export to come first. It saves time on the projects."

Supporting a more data-driven future

Although AFRY continues to measure the concrete gains in terms of efficiency and data quality, the direction is clear.

The ambition is that NTI COMANAGE will eventually become a central part of the company's digital application landscape and function as an important link between design tools, project data and other digital solutions.

The platform also supports AFRY's goal to be more data-driven across the organisation.

NTI COMANAGE has the potential to become a key element in the further digitalisation of the company, with the plan to eventually have it become a mandatory tool on the company's larger projects.

"NTI COMANAGE has become a fairly central point. All the design aspects of our work have to go through there, and it has opened up some opportunities we didn't have before."

Based on AFRY's experience, Kenneth Højbjerg also has a clear piece of advice for other engineering and consulting companies that face similar challenges:

"Try it out – and get away from Excel. It will raise the quality no matter which platform you choose."
